Post Twelve: Traveling by Train in Italy – Make Advance Reservations

Before leaving for our Italian holiday I researched traveling from one destination to another by train. Our first train ride would be from Venice to Florence, and research indicated that the Trenitalia Frecce high-speed trains were the preferred selection. We booked online directly on the Trenitalia website, and were fortunate to reserve our seats in advance. There were only two Frecce trains each day from Venice to Florence. The first left early afternoon, but the second left later in the evening. It is hard enough to navigate a new city, let alone try and find your way in the dark!

We arrived at the Santa Lucia Train Station almost two hours early, and checked in at the Trenitalia ticket office. The agents were very kind, and extremely helpful. While exchanging our reservation confirmation vouchers for the official train tickets we heard many travelers desperate to find seats on the fully booked afternoon Frecce train.

It pays to reserve ahead and also to arrive early. While waiting for our train ride we enjoyed a delicious glass of wine, and one of the best pizzas ever! (Yes, at the train station!)

We also reserved our seats in advance for the journey from Florence to Rome. Once again we were able to make reservations for Trenitalia Frecce high speed afternoon train. Our train ride from Florence to Rome took less than two hours! Ciao, ciao!
